April 15, 1949 – April 26, 2010

A board member of Affirmations in the early 1990s, Kathryn Leta Wright of Lathrup Village earned her D.O. from the Michigan State University School of Osteopathic Medicine.  In her position with the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, she founded the Horizons Project in 1994 targeting the needs of HIV-positive and at-risk youth.  Wright was survived by her life partner Susan Brooks and daughter Jordan.

Portia Fagan

February 4, 1938 – February 27, 2009

Portia June Fagan was born in Kalamazoo, attended Richland High School, graduated from Western Michigan University, and had a long career as a tax preparer and real estate broker.  In 1994, she came out as lesbian in the Kalamazoo Gazette to “break down stereotypes.”  Fagan and her life partner Janice O’Dell retired to Arizona in the early 2000s.

Rockford resident Patricia “Patti” Gibbs graduated with the class of 1961 from Central High School in Grand Rapids and retired from Quest Diagnostics.  She was a longtime member of Reconciliation Metropolitan Community Church and served as one of its directors.

Ryan Pennacchini Hall was born in Midland and grew up in Gladwin.  He graduated from Gladwin High School and attended Eastern Michigan University before moving in 2003 to Tucson, Arizona, where he worked as a manager at Bookmans new and used bookstore.  Pennacchini Hall and his spouse Frederico Hall Pennacchini were married on October 25, 2014.

Sarah Flick

April 1, 1963 – September 20, 2019

The first female player on the Little League baseball team in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota, Sarah Ann Flick was born in Chicago and lived in Grand Rapids in the late 1980s.  She spent 18 years in law enforcement, retiring in 2017 from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.  Flick passed away from cancer at the home she shared in Ada, Michigan with her wife Heidi Gidley.

Flint native Denise Lynn Welsh grew up in Burton and worked as a teacher consultant for student with autism spectrum disorders in the Genesee Intermediate School District for more than two decades.  She was survived by her sons and her life partner Betsy Curtis.

Michelle Hughson

Jackson resident Michelle Marie “Mitch” Hughson was born in Lansing and graduated with the class of 1985 from Charlotte High School.  For 12 years, Hughson worked as a radiologist technician at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.

Peter Cooper

Detroit native Peter Cooper, Cody High School class of 1971, worked for National City Bank for 20 years and for a decade was employed with AIDS Partnership Michigan.  While in college in the early 1970s, he became involved in the Wayne State Gay Liberation Front.  He was subsequently active in MCC Detroit, ASP, Simcha, and Affirmations.  Cooper was survived by his partner of 12 years Jonathan Quirk.

John Pierre Adams

July 28, 1921 – January 9, 1994

Born in Detroit, John Pierre Adams served in the U.S. Army during World War II and, while living in New York City following his tour of duty, performed with the Katherine Dunham Dance Company.  He returned to Detroit in the 1950s and worked as a shipping clerk for an equipment company.  In the 1970s, Adams led the local gay organization ONE in Detroit as its president for three years.
