Ferndale resident and pioneering AIDS activist Richard William Villaire was born in Wyandotte and attended Roseville High School and Ferris State University before earning his B.A. in psychology at Eastern Michigan University. He was an officer of the Michigan Organization for Human Rights and was a founder of Wellness Networks, Friends Alliance, and the Midwest AIDS Prevention Project.

Wyandotte resident Gay Whiteside formed a chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis in Detroit in 1971. She was also active with the Gay Radio Collective and a longtime member of the Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit.

Leo Janas worked in the shipping industry and resided over the years in Wyandotte, Melvindale, and Dearborn. In 1953, he became the first person from Metro Detroit to subscribe to ONE magazine.
