Paul Steczek

July 22, 1957 – April 17, 2013

Paul Edward Steczek of Royal Oak grew up in Detroit and was on the staff of the Backstage in the 1980s.  He later worked as manager for 24 Hour Video and then operated Blue Moon Video for 11 years.  Steczek was preceded in death by his partner Richard Shank in 1992 and survived by Daniel Christine, with whom he was joined in a civil union in 1995.

George Benjey

Hamtramck resident George Benjey was born in Detroit, grew up Downriver, and graduated from Woodhaven High School in 1981.  A longtime member of Metro Detroit’s LGBTQ community, Benjey worked at the Gold Coast Saloon, Backstage, and Tiffany’s.

Lawrence Burns

April 9, 1958 – August 14, 1989

Lawrence Richard Burns was born in Detroit and for nine years worked at the Backstage restaurant, first as a waiter and later as assistant manager and bookkeeper.  A onetime resident of Palmer Park in Detroit, Burns lived in Westland.  He died from AIDS-related complications at age 41.

Scott Lawrence

Scott Lawrence pic

October 29, 1961 – February 10, 2000

Scott Lawrence, a homeowner in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, graduated high school in Warren and was employed with area advertising agencies.  He volunteered with Affirmations Community Center and for a time worked as a waiter at the Backstage Deli.  Lawrence was survived by his life partner Ron Fisher.
