Curt Tramble

October 26, 1967 – July 17, 1998

Born in Flint, Curt Flood Tramble attended the Flint Public Schools and graduated from the Detroit College of Business.  He served as a case administrator with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, retiring in 1996.  Tramble later worked as a gas station manager and as a hotel desk clerk.  He died from AIDS-related complications at age 30.

Tim Liupakka

Timothy Richard Liupakka graduated in 1986 from Marquette Senior High School and attended Northern Michigan University before moving to Milwaukee to pursue a degree in interior design.  Liupakka performed under the drag name Tabitha Stephens in Wisconsin and later in annual shows at NMU.  In 2015, he moved to Florida where he worked in hotel housekeeping and married Peter Williamson.

David Blair

September 19, 1967 – July 23, 2011

David Blair, better known as Blair, was born in Newton, New Jersey and moved to Detroit in the 1990s.  He achieved national recognition as an openly queer socialist poet, artist, singer-song writer, and activist.  Blair also taught poetry to Detroit Public School students and at the Ruth Ellis Center.  Among his many achievements were a National Poetry Slam title and the BENT Writing Institute Mentor Award.

LaVell Williams

February 23, 1967 – October 27, 2018

Roseville resident LaVell Williams grew up in Detroit, graduated from Cooley High School, and attended the Center for Creative Studies.  From 1997 to 2010, he worked at Record Time in Roseville and Ferndale and music was central to his life.  Williams was co-founder of the Detroit Sound Conservancy and volunteered with the Michigan Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, AIDS Walk Detroit, and Motor City Pride.

Michael LaGatella graduated from Lincoln High School in Warren and tended bar at the Woodward in Detroit while attending Wayne State University.  After he took his own life, LaGatella’s friends established a scholarship in his name for gay and lesbian students at Wayne.

Mary Beth Dietz

Mary Beth Dietz earned a B.A. in English from Michigan State University and taught English in Wisconsin before returning to school to become a chiropractor.  She and LeAnne Ray became the first same-sex couple married in Michigan City, Indiana.
