Kurt Tamm

October 26, 1966 – December 21, 2007

Born in Los Angeles, Kurt Andrew Tamm went to Bentley High School in Livonia.  He later tended bar at Backstreet in Detroit and Cobalt in Ferndale.  In his last years, Tamm made a home in Puerto Rico.  He died from AIDS-related complications at age 41.

Dennis Wayne Duvall was born in Monroe, earned a B.S. in Arts Management from Eastern Michigan University, and worked as a manager for Frames Unlimited.  In the persona of Lisa Carlisle, Duvall performed at the Rubaiyat and Nectarine Ballroom in Ann Arbor and at such bars as Backstreet, the Deck, Gigi’s, and the Pink Flamingo in Detroit.  Duvall won the Miss Gay Ann Arbor title for 1985-86.

Carl Rippberger

October 8, 1947 – May 16, 1994

Born in Detroit, Carl Rippberger graduated from Denby High School and served a tour of duty in Vietnam as a U.S. Army draftee.  He bar tended at Tiffany’s before acquiring the Escape Lounge, which he opened as Backstreet nightclub in 1979.  Rippberger served as president of the Detroit Bar Guild and helped raise funds for Wellness House and Affirmations.  He died from AIDS-related complications at age 46.

Tony Maniaci

Tony Maniaci pic

August 5, 1984 – March 7, 2013

Pleasant Ridge resident Anthony Leonard Maniaci was born in Detroit.  He worked as a popular bartender at Menjo’s and Backstreet in Detroit, and at Pronto in Royal Oak.  At the time of his death, Maniaci was manager at Inuendo.
