Ohio native Paul Eugene Espenscheid enjoyed a long career in hospitality, from the 1970s to the late 1980s was part owner and manager of the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge in Monroe.  Following the death of Mike Crawford in 1988, Espenschied became co-owner with Don Hazlett of Menjo’s dance club in Detroit.  Beyond his business interests, he also supported a number of AIDS and gay rights causes.

James Asher

September 28, 1956 – June 1, 2017

Monroe native James Asher graduated from Monroe High School in 1974 and went on to undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University and graduate studies at California State.  Prior to moving to California, he played professional tennis through racquet clubs in Bloomfield Hills and Rochester Hills.  In later years he coached and taught high school English.  He was survived by his partner Brent Sweer.

Patricia Boudrie

August 19, 1950 – February 9, 2021

Patricia Ann Boudrie was born in Monroe, graduated with the Monroe High School class of 1968, and earned a certificate of early childhood development at Monroe County Community College.  She worked as a secretary at Jefferson High School and at MCCC and also spent a total of 11 years as a teacher’s aide.  Boudrie and her partner Tracey Moran shared homes in Monroe and Newport.

Sandra Langeland

December 4, 1940 – July 6, 2020

A graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Monroe, Sandra Lee Langeland earned her B.S. in physical education from Michigan State University in 1964.  She received her Ph.D. at the University of Denver and taught psychology at the Oakland Community College Highland Lakes Campus for 29 years.  Langeland and her life partner Susan Murdock shared homes un Union Lake before moving to Florida.

Dennis Duvall

March 8, 1961 – August 31, 1992

Dennis Wayne Duvall was born in Monroe, earned a B.S. in Arts Management from Eastern Michigan University, and worked as a manager for Frames Unlimited.  In the persona of Lisa Carlisle, Duvall performed at the Rubaiyat and Nectarine Ballroom in Ann Arbor and at such bars as Backstreet, the Deck, Gigi’s, and the Pink Flamingo in Detroit.  Duvall won the Miss Gay Ann Arbor title for 1985-86.
