December 19, 1943 – December 26, 2017

Born in Negaunee, Thomas Louis Baldini graduated from St. Paul’s High School in 1961 and earned his Bachelor’s from Northern Michigan University in 1965.  He taught at Marquette Senior High for nearly 20 years and served on the Michigan Technological University Board of Trustees from 2010 to 2016.  Baldini was elected to the Marquette City Council in 2014 and died a month after becoming mayor.

Mary Linton

July 23, 1954 – June 13, 2021

Mary Catherine Linton was valedictorian of the class of 1972 at Bullock Creek High School in Midland, earned her B.S. from Michigan State, Master’s from Michigan Tech, and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky.  She devoted her life to science and poetry, specializing in wetlands, and served an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin.  Linton was survived by her wife and partner Kathy Kauffman.

June 2, 1964 – July 2, 2018

Joseph Patrick Periard of Kalamazoo, formerly of Southfield, was born in Bay City and graduated from Bay City Western High School.  He earned his Bachelor’s in computer science from Michigan Technological University and was later employed with Ford Credit in Detroit.  In March 2017, Periard was united in marriage with Joseph Biron II, who survives him.

Chet Sampson

Chester James “Chet” Sampson of Los Angeles was born in Hubbell and attended Michigan Tech before transferring to the University of Michigan.  During World War II he produced variety shows in the U.S. Navy.  He later taught high school in Grosse Pointe before opening his own travel agency.  In 1965, he founded ONE in Detroit, only the second formal homosexual organization in Michigan.
