Lansing resident Karen “Twig” Hartwig graduated from East Lansing High School, attended Lansing Community College, and earned a B.A. from Michigan State University.  Employed by Sparrow Hospital and later Sam’s Club, she served on the boards of Suits in the City and Michigan Pride.

Norman Pross

Lansing activist and physical therapist Norman Pross was born in Bay City and grew up in Standish.  He earned a Bachelor’s in education from Central Michigan University.  After moving to Lansing in 1974, he was employed with the Eaton Intermediate School District and later worked as an HIV/AIDS consultant for the State of Michigan.

Nancy Gardner

Lansing resident Nancy Gardner worked as a computer analyst and volunteered with Capital Area Literacy, Haven House, and Edgewood United Church of Christ.  She and her spouse Julia Grant were one of more than 300 Michigan same-sex couples to wed on June 21, 2014, the day after U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman ruled the state’s marriage ban unconstitutional.

Bill Beachler

A founder in 1979 of the Lansing Association for Human Rights, William Beachler later helped establish the Pride Scholarship for LGBT students at his alma mater Michigan State University.

Larry Barnard

September 20, 1937 – March 15, 1990

A retired school teacher, Larry Barnard founded the Greater Lansing Gay Men’s Chorus, was active with the Lansing Area AIDS Network, and served as an officer and volunteer in several capacities for the Lansing Association for Human Rights and the Michigan Organization for Human Rights.
