Valerie Connell

June 21, 1953 – November 20, 2008

St. Joseph native Valerie Jean Connell became a champion horse rider during her school years, taking part in multiple horse associations and winning prizes at the Michigan State Fair.  After graduating from Edwardsburg High in 1971, she joined the U.S. Army, later earned her B.S. and M.S., and went on to teach social studies in Florida.  Connell was survived by her partner Lenora Ledwon.

Deborah Powell

August 31, 1958 – April 20, 1999

Deborah Sue Powell of Adrian was born in Illinois, spent part of her childhood in Toledo, Ohio, and studied fisheries and wildlife at Kent State.  She later served as a cook in the U.S. Air Force and was an assembly line worker at the Ford Automotive plant in Rawsonville.  Powell was survived by former partners Deb Harkins and Cheryl Zupan.

Daniel Brauer

Grand Rapids native and Alpine Township resident Daniel Kenneth Brauer graduated from Ottawa Hillls High School in 1957 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1963.  Brauer was pastor of the Muskegon Metropolitan Community Church from 1991 until his death from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty water heater in his home.  He also served a vice chair of Muskegon Area AIDS Resource Services.

Wayne Friday

November 26, 1936 – October 12, 2016

Originally from Flint, Wayne Friday served in the U.S. Navy following high school and later worked as a stock broker on Wall Street and in San Francisco where Friday became close friends with future gay supervisor Harvey Milk.  He also tended bar and for more than three decades he wrote a political column for the Bay Area Reporter.  Suffering from Parkinson’s disease, Friday took his own life at age 79.

Carl Kinnunen

Longtime Ironwood resident Carl Mathew Kinnunen grew up in Wisconsin and attended college at the University of Wisconsin.  During World War II, Kinnunen served in the U.S. Navy as a Yeoman First Class in the Pacific.  He later worked as an accountant in the construction industry and in retirement was active in his church choir and with charitable causes in Gogebic and Iron counties.

Karen Knudstrup

May 25, 1939 – September 17, 2017

Born in Mason, Karen Anne Knudstrup graduated from Mason High School, earned her Bacherlor’s in social science in 1961 at Michigan State University, and went on to teach physical education in Catholic and public high schools in Chicago.  She was a delegate in the teacher’s union and also served in the U.S. Navy Reserves.  Knudstrup was survived by Diana Haskell, her partner of 52 years.

Richard Dingley

November 20, 1919 – April 6, 2008

Fort Wayne, Indiana native Richard Dingley served as a Warrant Officer in World War II.  He worked for many years with International Harvester in Traverse City before retiring to Cincinnati, Ohio.   Dingley enjoyed baseball, railroads, and opera.  He was a longtime subscriber to the early homophile magazine the Mattachine Review in the 1950s.

Harvi Griffin

Detroit native Harvi Alonzo Griffin was a world-renowned harpist, singer, and teacher.  He graduated from Cass Tech High School and earned a B.A. and his M.A. from Michigan State University, served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964, and pursued further studies at the Eastman School of Music.  Griffin moved to Phoenix in the late 1980s and was survived by his partner of 13 years Lee Barr.

Carl Mitchell

April 12, 1932 – May 14, 2018

Orphaned as a child, former Detroiter Carl Mitchell joined the U.S. Army at age 17 and served as a combat medic during the Korean War.  While home in Detroit on leave, he discovered the gay bars downtown, where his uniform attracted much attention.  He later worked as a nurse in Detroit-area hospitals.  Mitchell was survived in St. Petersburg, Florida by Robert Stanley, his partner of 48 years.

Joe Courter

November 6, 1949 – July 14, 1988

Longtime Lansing resident Joseph Martin “Joe” Courter graduated from John H. Gabriels High School and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1981.  Following his military service, Courter worked for General Telephone Company and, for the last two years of his life, resided in Alma.  He died from AIDS-related complications at age 38.
