Grosse Pointe Park resident Stuart George Itzkowitz moved Detroit in 1974 after earning his Masters at the University of Michigan. He became active with the Wayne State University GLF, was a founder of MOHR, and served on the board of Wellness Networks. He went on to get his Ph.D. from Wayne State, where he later taught. Itzkowitz was preceded in death by his husband and partner of 38 years Larry Zimmerman.
I had the pleasure of knowing Stuart as a classmate at Stuyvesant
High School. Although we did not hang out beyond school hours,
I was with him enough to recognize his beautiful, gentle soul.
We were in French class together, and I’ll always remember his
beautiful voice saying “je m’appelle George” with that wonderful
‘zh’ sound where the g’s are. When I received newsletters from
the school, I often looked to see any news about him and a few
others I knew. Rest in peace, dear George. I know heaven will
be a better place for your arrival…
