Karen Sundberg of Taylor was born in Marquette, graduated from Ishpeming Public Schools, earned her B.A. from Northern Michigan University, and received an M.A. from Wayne State. In the 1980s, she was active in Lesbian Sisters Building a Network and served as treasurer of the Detroit Area Gay/Lesbian Council. Sundberg was also active for many decades in the National Organization for Women.
I met Karen as a young boy, maybe 9 or 10, and knew her most of my youth because she was often an attendee and speaker at Michigan Atheist meetings and conventions that my father took me to starting in the late 1980s. Growing up in southeast Macomb County, I believe Karen might have been the first “out” person I met at that time. I always enjoyed her spirit and conversations. I always remember her NOW buttons that she would wear. She was an activist in the best way – smart, fun, strong in her positions on human rights and personal freedom. I’m glad she is remembered here.
